What is the Bottleneck Calculator?
The GCC Gaming PC bottleneck calculator estimates how well your processor and graphics card are matched for gaming. It compares normalized gaming performance scores for over 200 CPUs and GPUs — from older GTX and RX cards up to the latest RTX 50 series and Ryzen 9000 X3D chips — and tells you which component limits your frame rates at your resolution.
How It Works
Pick your CPU and GPU, choose the resolution you play at, and optionally set your RAM amount. The calculator compares both components' gaming scores at that resolution, weights the gap by how much the weaker part actually matters — games become more GPU-bound as resolution rises — and returns a bottleneck percentage with a plain-language verdict: balanced, mild or severe.
Methodology & Data Sources
Each CPU and GPU carries a normalized 0-100 gaming score per resolution, curated from publicly available benchmark reviews and relative-performance data. We compute the relative gap between your two components' scores, then weight it by the CPU's influence at your resolution: 60% at 1080p, 40% at 1440p and 25% at 4K (GPU-limited pairings use the complementary weight). Under 10% is balanced, 10-25% is a mild bottleneck and above 25% is severe. No 'true' bottleneck number exists — every calculator estimates — so we publish our exact formula instead of hiding it.

What is a CPU or GPU bottleneck?
A bottleneck is when one component limits the performance of the other. If your CPU can't prepare frames as fast as your GPU can render them, the GPU sits idle waiting — that's a CPU bottleneck. If the GPU is the slower part, frame rates cap out while the CPU idles — a GPU bottleneck.
What percentage of bottleneck is acceptable?
Under 10% is a well-balanced build and nothing to worry about. 10-25% is noticeable in some games but rarely worth immediate spending. Above 25% means one component is significantly held back, and upgrading the weaker part will give a clear performance jump.
Is a GPU bottleneck bad?
Not necessarily — in fact, a mild GPU bottleneck is the ideal state for gaming. It means your graphics card is fully utilized and your CPU always has headroom. A severe GPU bottleneck simply means you'd get large gains from a faster graphics card.
Why does resolution change the bottleneck result?
At 1080p the GPU renders frames quickly, so the CPU's ability to keep up matters most. At 1440p and especially 4K, each frame takes the GPU far longer, so the CPU spends more time waiting and its weaknesses matter less. That's why the same pairing can be CPU-bottlenecked at 1080p yet balanced at 4K.
Does RAM cause bottlenecks too?
Yes, but differently — insufficient RAM causes stutters and long loading rather than lower average FPS. For modern gaming, 16 GB is the baseline and 32 GB is comfortable for streaming or heavy multitasking. The calculator flags builds with less than 16 GB.
How accurate is a bottleneck calculator?
Every bottleneck calculator is an estimate — real bottlenecks vary per game, settings and even scene.
