What is the PSU Wattage Calculator?

The GCC Gaming PC PSU calculator estimates how much power your gaming PC actually draws, then recommends a power supply wattage with a safe efficiency and upgrade margin. It covers over 200 CPUs and GPUs — from older GTX and RX cards up to the latest RTX 50 series and Ryzen 9000 X3D chips — using official TDP figures from Intel, AMD and NVIDIA.

How It Works

Pick your CPU and GPU, set how many RAM sticks, drives and fans your build has, and toggle liquid cooling or overclocking if they apply. The calculator sums the official power figures for every part, adds a fixed allowance for the motherboard and peripherals, then applies a 40% headroom multiplier and rounds up to the nearest standard PSU size (550W, 650W, 750W, 850W, 1000W or 1200W).

Methodology & Data Sources

CPU and GPU power figures are the official TDP / total board power values published by Intel (ARK), AMD and NVIDIA. On top of those we allow 50W for the motherboard, 5W per RAM stick, 8W per SSD, 10W per HDD, 3W per case fan and 15W for an AIO pump, add 15% when overclocking is enabled, and multiply the total by 1.4 for headroom. This tool is intentionally more conservative than the compatibility check inside our PC Builder, which validates completed builds with its own margin.

How much PSU wattage do I need for gaming?

Most single-GPU gaming PCs need between 550W and 850W. A mid-range build such as a Ryzen 5 with an RTX 4060 runs comfortably on 550-650W, while high-end cards like the RTX 4080 or RX 7900 XTX call for 850W or more. Use the calculator above with your exact parts for a precise recommendation.

Is it bad to buy a PSU with more wattage than I need?

No — a higher-wattage PSU only draws the power your components request. Running at 50-60% load actually keeps the unit in its most efficient range, generates less heat and leaves room for future GPU upgrades. The only downside is the extra upfront cost.

What is an ATX 3.0 power supply and do I need one?

ATX 3.0 is a PSU standard designed for modern graphics cards that can briefly spike to twice their rated power. It includes the 12VHPWR / 12V-2x6 connector used by RTX 40 and 50 series cards. If you're buying a GPU rated at 320W or more, an ATX 3.0 unit is strongly recommended.

Does overclocking change how big my PSU should be?

Yes. Overclocking a CPU or GPU raises its power draw well beyond the official TDP — often by 10-20%. The calculator adds a 15% margin when you enable the overclocking toggle, on top of the standard 40% headroom.

What happens if my PSU wattage is too low?

An underpowered PSU can cause sudden shutdowns and restarts under gaming load, crashes during GPU power spikes, and long-term stress on the unit. In the worst case, over-current protection trips repeatedly or the system fails to boot with a high-end GPU installed.

Are the wattage numbers in this calculator official?

Yes — CPU and GPU figures come from the official specification pages published by Intel, AMD and NVIDIA (TDP or total board power). Allowances for the motherboard, memory, storage and cooling are conservative industry-standard estimates, and the final recommendation adds 40% headroom on top.
